/2 Easy way for the regime to get rid of "unwelcome elements", but quite the opposite of reconciliation. This will haunt the society for years. Reminds me of "prison or Deir ez-Zor" policy 2014-17. People won't forget.

/1 Can't stress enough how sick this is. The regime deploys "reconciled" rebels to the frontlines in Syria's northwest where they face opposition fighters and jihadists. Some defect, some get executed for disobedience, others die in combat.

In early 2017, the US regularly targeted JFS/AQ in Idlib and inflicted significant casualties. Astana's de-escalation zones placed the reins in the hands of Russia and Turkey, US only targeted high-profile targets since. This seems to be the site of the latest strike:

The situation is already a disaster, but it would ultimately collapse without the financial aid coming from relatives who – in many cases – have been displaced by the regime years ago and now live abroad.

The regime flags are waving again but there is no sign of reconciliation. Reconciled rebels remain within their own military formations, distrusted by the regime, while people even reorganized one of the revolution's local councils to organize things themselves.

People in southern Syria suffer from a fundamental lack of basic services (electricity, water, education, medical services). Great reporting by that illustrates the absence of governance in formally regime-controlled areas:

The US's cyberattack targeted Kata'ib Hezbollah, Iranian led/sponsored and active in both Iraq and Syria, CNN reports. Unlikely that Kata'ib Hezbollah is particularly vulnerable to cyberattacks.

Why is this shot-down of a US Triton/Global Hawk by a big deal *from a drone scholar point of view*? 1. The GH is the world's biggest drone system. We are talking about a flying "data hoover", filled w/ high tech equipment --> This is a hugely expensive system.
