The CHP is a Kemalist and Nationalist party first and foremost. While Imamoglu spoke out against discrimination against Syrian refugees on the campaign trail, he also stated his desire for them to go home.

Senior CHP leaders have also visited Assad in Damascus and expressed their desire to normalise relations with the dictator and send Syrians back to Syria (in violation of international law), even while Assad continues to execute civilian refugees upon their return.

It's easy for Western media to seek black and white narratives when covering complicated foreign policy issues, but it's vitally important that the real positions of these parties are accurately covered.

All in all, it's hard not to find satisfaction in Erdogan losing Istanbul after the anti-democratic farce that he attempted to pull off. But that doesn't mean journalists should blindly laud the CHP, any cursory look at their history should give plenty of reason for scrutiny.

People are rightly bringing up Yildirim's rhetoric on Syrians too. I have addressed that, and have condemned it. I am adding it to the thread. As you can see, Turkish politics is complicated.https://twitter.com/OzKaterji/status/1142862124575797248 …

Here is an example of CHP supporters celebrating victory tonight by telling Syrians to go home. This user is sharing a tourism video made by the Assad regime, telling Syrians living in Turkey there is no war, and telling them "Yallah, go home".https://twitter.com/esmanote/status/1142872132839464961 …

CHP is not xenophobic, they are liberal and seen as the 3th most xenophile party after the HDP and AKP. The majority of Turks want the Syrians gone it has nothing to do with CHP.

You’re justifying racism to excuse the CHP, totally normal behaviour for a “liberal”. Get in the

This matter is kind of complex. CHP is pro-human rights and Kemalist, but at same time, the refugees give advantage to Erdogan (super religious, uneducated). They are very confused about the matter: on one hand they want to help Kurds, on other hand, they don't want to help PKK.
-
The CHP are pro-Assad, not pro-human rights. There really is no nuance being lost here, they have explicitly stated they want to normalise relations with Damascus.
-
Some misguided CHP think that Assad is "secular". Additionally, because Erdogan was anti-Assad for a while, they took the opposite position for votes. Kemalists are not typically fond of anti-democratic entities like dictators. The PKK/YPG topic has complicated matters further.
-
Kemalism's prophet Mustafa Kemal never implemented true democracy. If he had implemented true democracy the people would not have voted for him. No one can deny the truth in this statement.

You can't know what to want if you don't yet know anything about it. Think any democracy would stay a democracy if they allowed the monarchist/imperialist party to run for office to declare their dictatorship? Ataturk brought democracy to Turkey, his opponents wanted a Sultan.
-
FYI, slavery was once popular too, which is why tyranny of the majority isn't a good thing. Islamism is very popular in the Middle East and most of the parties which opposed Ataturk, wanted the Sultan. Some even believed Ataturk would declare himself Sultan.

Ataturk engaged in a very long campaign of forced secularization of the state. There was no democracy in Turkey until the 1950 elections. The first time CHP entered *real* elections, it lost. Later, the kemalist mentality had Menderes couped and hanged.pic.twitter.com/0vcrGVi1Q0

How can you force secularization? It literally means not forcing any religion on anyone. You should be embarrassed. Turkey had free elections and CHP won in 1946. Menderes used the army to suppress votes, it ended with a coup. Menderes had become a tyrant, suppressed speech.
