@dankanemitsu Hello! I'm sorry if you've been asked this many times before, but I and a few others are particularly curious about some translation choices done on the Evangelion English script on Netflix. Particularly: It seems some of the romantic dialogue between (1/2)

It is one thing for characters to confess their love. It is quite another for the audience to infer affection and leave them guessing. How committed are the characters? What possible misunderstandings might be talking place? Leaving room for interpretation make things exciting.
-
This is a great response that helps clear up a lot of doubt I had about the process! It's good to see things like narrative purpose and storytelling reason more heavily considered in the act of writing the translated script and I thank you a lot for your time and work!
-
Nah, it was a terrible, weaselly, and cowardly response.
-
Replying in a professional manner is not cowardly or weaselly. If what you want is to respond more in a way that he is not allowed to and possibly risk his career, no one owes you that.
-
1. That he would risk his career by answering this simple a question should be a big point here. 2. He doesn’t owe me anything. 3. He wants to have it both ways, offering a craven non-answer.
-
But of course it wouldn’t be a day on social media without our daily dose of meaningless outrage because scientific studies have shown that outrage induces euphoria in people and once they start they can’t stop.
-
Sure. Because you’re not outraged here, constantly replying and challenging others while defending corporate media. You’re perfectly calm and rational and sober while the rest of us are rabid animals, just seeking that euphoric hit of daily outrage.

The problem with the power of storytelling is that it's not yours to hold. The story has been told. You're there to translate it. Not change it.
-
"While I am not in a position to refer specifically to the decision involved in the scene you described" also this sentence stinks...it means there was a deliberate decision to change this line. For what purpose?

Okay but, If they really said "love", then leave it at love. Unless it's totally accurate to the source material, why is any degree of interpretation left at all? Why do you get to choose what's interpreted (provided that it's been changed from source material)
-
The source material uses 好き, which can mean anything from liking something to loving someone. So there is a certain ambiguity in the original text.

Sir they are romantic interactions in all Versions it’s not on how ‘people interpreted it’ it’s a fact from the original. Your translations are wrong and suggests something bigger please change the translation because it is wrong and hurtful.
