hey @netflix, pride month is totally the perfect time to attempt to minimize via translation a gay romance. definitely pick one that’s been one of the only ones in mainstream sci fi canon for decades. perfect timing! 1/ [spoilers in thread] #Evangelion

4/ i have no inside information but i feel it may have been possible they got away with being as explicit as they could in the first airing of the show and the manga is, to an extent, them confirming their intentions. there are a lot of creatives and authors involved ofc

6/ what’s especially frustrating is that this has been an accepted translation (kaoru expressing love for shinji) for OVER 20 YEARS. it is solidly in the queer canon and many cite it as one of the few blatant homoerotic romances in this kind of media.

7/ a lot of us were excited about this coming out because this content was important to us. we were excited to show it to our partners and friends. this is incredibly disappointing to have that moment taken, even just lessened. it’s just kind of typical of rainbow capitalism tho.

8/ i’ve got a lot to say about other tropes at play in the manga (and lesser extent show) around queerness, much of it not good (for example a lot of media ties queerness to lack of consent and villainy) but it’s fair to say the netflix translation sucks. they should change it.

9/ (bit of a postscript) from rewatching these scenes, it's still incredibly gay. but they're just giving ammunition to the stupidly long-running attempts to interpret it as anything else. it's a trope in itself the lengths people will go to 'logically' to avoid accepting gayness

10/ just gotta reiterate this. this is 20 year old content. for a lot of fans, this may have been the very first time they saw someone like themselves in the kind of media they like to consume. at the time, this was as explicit as it ever got.

PS/ I think this is more about someone seeing a need to change 20 year old content than people being finicky about a new translation. like, why? more directly i wanted to point out this is a streaming platform. they can update the subs or add a second non-dubtitle subtitle track.

PPS/ for the people insisting the manga wasn't written by anno: 1. eva was always a team effort. you'd know if you read interviews 2. anno gave an interview to a gay magazine talking about how gay it was (and he even says he ALREADY toned it down) more: https://twitter.com/deaddboyynsfw/status/1142139841901158400 …pic.twitter.com/ogG3uyWPdy

PPPPPSS(?)/ original script was more blatant in other places as well. all evidence points towards the creators not wanting something ambiguous, and instead perhaps making something ambiguous because that's what gets on tv in 1995. right?https://twitter.com/thirdpiIot/status/1142149573818716160 …

Wasn't the kissing scene in Shini's sleep? He was having a nightmare so Kawrou got on top of him and started kissing him.
-
I mean if you want to see Kawrou and Shinji as a couple the Rebuilds are the place to look. Kawrou in the manga scares Shinji to the point where half the time he hates him.
-
yeah it ties into a lot of other homophobic tropes around queerness but the point is in all three complete takes on this it is explicitly gay. how consensual it is is a different conversation, but it’s never straight friendship
-
i think the manga does point towards internalized homophobia, which doesn’t make kaworu’s actions less rapey but it’s obviously more of a brokeback mountain type story, and if you think about how you would sanitize that movie we’re kind of getting what is happening here.
-
Yeah but Kawrou does a lot more then just being gay. He murders a kitten in front os Shinji, he tricks Shinji when they go swimming which causes him to almost drown, he walks into Asuka's dressing room, while they're changing.
-
Hi speaking as someone on the outside looking in: Look at this in the context of 20 yrs ago. Rep of any kind did not exist openly, and these characters, no matter how horrible the end for them was. Was important. And Kaworu may not be the best character, but its what people had.
-
I mean with Kawrou in the manga he scares Shinji and makes him very uncomfortable to be around. He basically sexually assaults him in his sleep (no matter how cute it looks) and then when they finally begin to be friends, Kawrou captures Unit 2 and attempts third impact.
-
Yah again I'm not saying it's wholesome or even a good representation. I'm saying this is what people had 20 years ago. And the anime the love confession absolutely helped Shinji. Take the manga out of this because the censorship was with the anime.
