        Aside: should we be working to eliminate the word "password" here? I feel like shared "secrets", rather than ones specific to individuals, should be called something different.

        Kinda found it. On android Pie it's in data/misc/wifi/WifiConfigStore.xml Just open the file as normal text files and search through it.

        Used to find this in older phones. But I think they changed it in newer Android. Can't find it in my Android Pie

        It might have changed at the same time they hardened against privacy exposure from wpa_supplicant's scanning.

        Yeah. Android is full of root vulns tho. I actually wondered if it's accessible from backups too, and if not, by what mechanism it's excluded.

        I have seen backups. No passwords are there. They are directly stored on Drive in encrypted form and get instantly saved with SSID when you change phones.
