1. There will not be any major elections in Turkey until 2023. Erdogan will finally get a time period in which he can take bold moves. Some of these moves will be to correct the structural flaws inherent in the post-Ottoman republic. They will be reformist, correctives measures
2. Elections in Turkey have had negative influence on disrupting Erdogan’s attempt to make structural reform in Turkish state. The constant need to win against a coalition of populist secular-nationalists parties have forced Erdogan’s hand to put his reforms on hold
3. Istanbul mayor elections aren’t important in themselves. But then have great symbolic significance. Erdogan wants to start the new period with a psychological boost and symbolic victory. While opposition wants to pave way for demanding early elections through winning Istanbul
4. I think the new period of bold moves will happen regardless of Istanbul election results but it will be even better if Erdogan had the power of symbolic & psychological victory behind him.
5. Certain power circles in Turkey and outside want to turn any AK Parti election defeat in Istanbul into a vote of no confidence in Erdogan. That is why CHP turned Istanbul election into a national issue.
6. Erdogan has the audacity of entering the moment of truth after the elections. Turkey’s internal peace and its regional role requires extraordinary steps. No election can or should hinder that.
7. The Istanbul electorate will be choosing b/w 2 different visions. CHP’s candidate is the Old Turkey with some make up and sweeter words. To help New Turkey go on an easier start, the CHP vision should be destroyed.
8. The populist anti-Erdogan rhetoric which is also mainstreamed in foreign press has nothing to offer Turkey. They can’t do better than AK Parti in terms of services and they have no grand vision for Turkey’s regional role.
9. Istanbul election is not only about Istanbul. It’s of great symbolic value. An AK Parti victory means a stronger and more stable Turkey in the region and a more motivated Erdogan for structural reform
10. It’s time to put the Old Turkey represented best in CHP’s authoritarian, extremist secular and isolationist vision, to rest. A new, stronger & more stable Turkey needs to defeat CHP one last time.
