Mohammed Morsi's death takes us back to Egypt's revolutionary moment -- as writes, the country's only democratically-elected leader helped kill off Egypt's hopes for democracy

Debate on last week’s attacks has so far focused on whether Iran was involved or not. I think that misses the more important question: if Iran did it, what is it trying to achieve? My latest (and not my title, btw)

Mohamed ’s legacy is a complex one &we should not forget the grey shades. Democratically elected, ousted by a coup, disappeared, treated so badly in jail it likely amounted to torture. But his year in power was also a tricky &sometimes dark chapter in ’s history (thread)

Again, shocking not surprising. State trying to avoid large crowds at funeral for a man now seen by many as a martyr. Morsi had many faults, but was Egypt's 1st democratically elected president. Egyptian state has learned nothing in yrs of repression under Mubarak and Sissi.

The geopolitical costs of Trump’s pathological dishonesty: US allies are reluctant to hold Tehran responsible for fear of encouraging an aggressive US response. If Iran is found responsible and there are no costs it encourages more aggressive Iranian behavior.

  16. There is a trend to explain the Syrian conflict as essentially "secular Sunnis" versus "Islamist Sunnis" and dismiss the sectarian vectors. This is wrong, misleading and expedient for those who want to normalize the Syrian government. Thomas cuts through this BS...
