This is a solid overview of the renewal in industrial policy from . Particularly good point on the most successive interventions being in upstream sectors (similar to public R&D investment logic).

This process has hurt poor & working class most Because those non-economic forms of meaning are often all they have & all they have access to. They don't require a big costly resume! Often you are born with them So elites have eroded the few things the working class are gifted

This framework (basically embraced by technocratic elite for last 30 years) assumes people care about only one thing -- which is having more & cheaper stuff. But people care about other things. Like community, friendships, family, faith, and place.

This links to this previous thread - There is no point in capturing institutions if you don't have: 1. a post-capture strategy 2. the people to staff the institutions and run them according to that strategy

A coordinated, educated and professionalised force that were ready to be airdropped into key institutions. Their unity of purpose and connections made the early AKP era look like a well-oiled machine, compared to the nepotism, shifting alliances and economic instability today.

It's not enough to capture the state; you need the human capital to staff its institutions and have them collectively work towards devising and executing your policies. The Gulenist network was this source of capital for the early AKP era.

We've had an earful of talk about the Gulenist movement, but why exactly were they necessary for Erdogan's rise? I think that this article from the now-defunct Social Matter mag has an answer: (open with cache)

We had a tough winter at the farm. We lost the bees. But we had an unexpected miracle of life, too, thanks to the non-linear nature of water. There's a lesson here, for both markets and politics. WE are non-linear. WE are a song of ice and fire.

No one: Egyptian liberal: Actually Morsi was plotting with the army to create a dictatorship, which is why we had to plot with the army to create a dictatorship.

The past 30 years have proven that the slippery slope is not just a reality, but that it might also be an inevitable reality.

Having a strong state and an open market are both necessary. The state can provide a firm corrective when the market actors act contrary to public interest and the common good, while an open market offers a non-state platform to act as a check on the state's economic power.

Instead of referring to "The Market" as if it is an autonomous being with its own ability to reason, we should exclusively refer to it as "actors in the market", making clear that it is no more than the collective interests of the private sector.

  20. Govt's support for Egypt's Sisi regime is as striking as the failure of the UK corporate media to cover it. Again, it's Corbyn who personally takes a stand. But where are others in Labour espousing genuinely alternative foreign policies in support of Corbyn? I don't see many.

“Kids can handle the kink.” “Nobody loves nakedness more than children.” Actual sentences written in a Huffington Post article. These are precisely the arguments that pedophiles make. That’s because the Left is absolutely trying to normalize pedophilia.
