    Building lasting, democratic institutions is a slow and gradual process. The Egyptian people were denied the right to see that process through, and be integral parts of it. 's death, if anything, will symbolize how the hope for democracy was stolen from the Egyptian people

    Helena’s thread captures my feelings well. Morsi was fairly elected 7 years ago and as with the slaughter of his supporters at Rabaa, the muted response to this injustice from US/EU officialdom shows how they value democracy only when it’s convenient.

    RIP Mohamed Morsi. He and his colleagues made a poor job of governing, were v. naive in their failure to foresee/forestall the military's super-vicious, anti-democratic counter-attack. But he was democratically elected! Small thread...

    We mourn the death of an Arab Spring leader, the first & only democratically elected president of Egypt & a good man. We mourn with a deep awareness that it is the regional & international order which made his ousting possible. But this story doesn’t end here.
