Too many of the so-called Arab secularists are morally bankrupt, and don't take my word for it: the region's foremost & widely-respected theorist in this regard, al-Jabri, wrote that "Arab secularism" as it's known is a misnomer. They're sectarian, militant & pro-autocrats.
More important, IMO, is that they tend to be disconnected from what's going on around them, outside Arab capitals. Outsiders immersed in the region often have a more authentic view of these communities than those living in Beirut/Cairo/Damascus bubbles.
