I met Morsi on the eve of the coup — & I were the last journalists to interview him. He was in denial about what was about to happen. We asked him if he trusted the army. He replied: "Gedan." (Very.) Three days later he was in jail.

  10. My personal verdict: As almost all things that are *this* anticipated, it fell short of expectations and lacked in substance perhaps until the last hour or so. Don't think it'll sway any voters any way. But at least we had a debate after 17 years. Turkey should do more of it.

  13. As the debate nears to an end, with a 3-minute final statement given to both Yildirim and Imamoglu, it's all giggles and smiles now between the two candidates.

  15. Imamoglu says his side is the one that can make pledges but not Yildirim's as AK Party ranks have been in power for the past 25 years in Istanbul. "AKP itself has been in power 17 years, and in Istanbul for 15 years." Yildirim interjects and that he's also a candidate.

  16. Now onto the women empowerment: Yildirim says they will build daycare facilities. Says Imamoglu pledged 11 daycares in Beylikduzu (where he served 5 years) but only built one. Yildirim adds "The point is not to make pledges, but make pledges that you can fulfill."

  19. Imamoglu says the refugee situation has been mismanaged but also Turkey was left on its own. Reminds a speech he gave in Paris years ago, told intl community that they left Turkey alone and that it'd bring issues they'd regret.
