The last 15 minutes of this two hours debate, and finally the two candidates are talking about situations, issues directly concerning Istanbulites and how they will address the various problems.

Ah, nihayet a question about the Kurdish voter base! I’m wondering in the last 8 minutes of the candidates will be asked about refugees, how to address refugee-host community tensions?

Binali, babes, voters today do not really care what the AKP/you did in 1994. Especially not the young voters who neither remember that time, nor know of any other governance other than the AKP.

Yıldırım says he has no problem making public his personal wealth (for anyone who remembers the

Pleasantly surprised; a question on Syrians & refugees in Istanbul is fielded. İmamoğlu condemns once again the decision of CHP municipalities to bar Syrians from beaches, outlines plans to develop municipal policy. Yıldırım agrees with İmamoğlu of the lack of int’l support to TR

Yıldırım went on to say that Syrians who “create disturbances, get involved in illegal matters” that they will be “sent back”. This is the existing policy, and is legally possible as Temporary Protection is not equal to refugee/asylum status.

Yani I’m glad the candidates have been asked about women’s issues (increasing participation in education & workforce). But it did take 2 hours & 10 minutes to get to here.

Finally a question about green spaces & earthquake preparation! İmamoğlu says there is no population projections & urban planning re: Istanbul. He’s turned AKP rhetoric (“25 years of AKP municipality”, Erdoğan’s “we betrayed this city”) against Yıldırım.

My cynical, bitchy assessment of this TV debate: 2 hours of my life I’ll never get back.

I suppose one of the few interesting insights of the debate was the fact that Binali Yıldırım has not read the Count of Accounts annual report on Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, and at the same time calls the information presented in the report “lies”.

This is on point. The debate was largely dominated by appealing to the mind -both sides presenting numbers, technical details- thus will have little impact on the election. Whereas in the parties’ emotional appeals aired (in form of campaign ads) during commercial breaks.pic.twitter.com/uGBwVIPhNA

Fundamentally, do we have any insights into if this TV debate (or indeed the respective campaigns for June 23) impacted the undecided voters & voters who did not bother to cast their ballots on March 31? Because if not, we’re better off shutting up.
