Unlike Bolton, Pompeo, Pence and Kushner, Pres Trump doesn’t have an ideological position on Israel He is actually first American president who doesn’t believe in special relationships or sacrificing US money/lives for others But...he likes his name. That’s his weak spot.

The debate will not have much effect on swaying vote to either side The June 23rd elections will be a close call. It is those who didn’t vote in last election who will determine its fate

Given Turkey’s deeply polarised politics, the debate went in a relatively calm situation. Imamoglu’s desire to reach out and not alienate AKParti base and Yildirim’s personal style helped with absence of tension

My overall assessment is it was a mediocre debate. It wasn’t at the expectation level especially that this is first major debate in a decade. No side had a clear win. Imamoglu was better in terms of explaining himself but Yildirim managed to compensate by several brutal comebacks

Imamoglu is a young, well spoken populist while Yildirimis an old and experienced statesman who has taken all positions except presidency. Imamoglu is better at words but Yildirim is good at doing. Will statesmanship beat populism?

Imamoglu: I will end partisanship after the elections. i represent all parties including HDP and AK Parti brothers. I don’t represent the Millet Alliance Populism at its finest

At this moment of the debate, Binali Yildirim seems more in control. He doubles down on accusing Imamoglu of lying. AKParti campaign has been relatively successful in creating ‘pathological liar’ image for Imamoglu.

Yildirim: He (Imamoglu) has made not telling the truth -I won’t say lying because he gets angry at it-. He has to apologize to Istanbulites and Turkish people but he is lying to them Imamoglu says he is sad for Yildirim calling him a liar

Yildirim: On June 23rd, It will be Imamoglu who will object to the election results Imamoglu says they will object if there were serious concerns. He seemed taken aback by Yildirim’s certainty in his prediction

Imamoglu continues to dominate the debate with his verbal skills. But the real punches came from Yildirim. He told Imamoglu “ I tolerate anything but I cannot tolerate lying” followed by “Our brother (Imamoglu) does not seem to get it”. They sound more brutal in Turkish ;)

Yildirim talked about AKParti achievements in last 25 years. Imamoglu tells about his achievements in his ‘16 days’ as mayor. Imamoglu made it look like his achievements were greater.

Half hour into the debate, candidates still debating whether the 31 March elections were rigged or not. The inability of the moderator and debate format allow Imamoglu dominate the debate even more

Debate started. Compliments flying in the air on . Immaoglu has come prepared -with gifts and printed ‘evidence’. The debate is also a face off b/w an extrovert Imamoglu and introvert Yilidirm. Looks like a one man show so far.
