    This is true. The problem is that when the US verifies Iran is behind the attack’s, Europeans will be stuck supporting the US, even if it is sullenly and despite their better judgement. By allowing the US to impose sanctions, they have signed onto escalation wherever it leads.

    The reason why many Europeans are not rushing to blame Iran for the tanker attacks is not because they believe that anybody else is likely to be responsible but because they don’t want to be associated with the American response.
