My next long piece will be about the Alawi community & will touch on this. I'd say that all of those complaining want Assad to remain in power because they link his survival to theirs. They just want the current regime to be more aggressively secular.

That's a textbook case of moral panic, i.e. a non-existent issue (religious establishment is a shadow of what it was pre-2011) overblown by the (social) media and political entrepreneurs like Nabil Salih.

@ThomasPierret , it is to my understanding that their powers have in fact expanded since 2011. If you can suggest any literature on the topic, it would be very much appreciated. As for the#Alawites, most of them have always viewed the#Syrian conflict in existential terms. -
