That's a textbook case of moral panic, i.e. a non-existent issue (religious establishment is a shadow of what it was pre-2011) overblown by the (social) media and political entrepreneurs like Nabil Salih.

@ThomasPierret , it is to my understanding that their powers have in fact expanded since 2011. If you can suggest any literature on the topic, it would be very much appreciated. As for the#Alawites, most of them have always viewed the#Syrian conflict in existential terms. -
