The re-run of Istanbul elections will take place next weekend. The two candidates made statements a few days ago about a sensitive subject: Syrian refugees. What did they say?
I will start with AKP's candidate. He further added: "Conditions in Syria started to improve. Therefore, we’ll take necessary measures in coordination with the central government for them to leave"
Then he was asked about Syrian run businesses with signboards in Arabic and staff with poor language skills, and whether he considered them a [cultural] richness: "It could be a sort of cultural richness, but until when? As long as there’s cohesion!"
He also added that "Those of benefit will work and stay. For others, we’ll facilitate their return."
He finished by saying: "If the problem of foreigners bothers the people of Istanbul, then it bothers me, too. We’ll deport any Syrian if they cause security related problems”

He thinks that addressing the subject of Syrians in Istanbul requires permanent and holistic solutions. Like what? "First and foremost, we’ll establish a refugee unit."
The socio-economic conditions of Syrians seem to be a priority for İmamoğlu: "We’ll pin down where, how, and under which circumstances they live."
Another priority seems to be vulnerable groups: "We’ll determine the problems pertaining especially to children and women and we’ll work with municipal and other governmental units in coordination with civil society to solve them"
Lastly, he finished by saying "We’ll work ardently to secure and facilitate refugees’ repatriation"
