Syrian Communists and former Communists are some of the bravest people living under Syrian regime control. Some are privileged because they're Alawi and Ismaili & hence seen as less suspicious, but their willingness to semi-openly defy the regime is quite astounding.
Current & former members of the Communist Party were willing to conduct interviews with me about highly sensitive issues. Some of them openly call for the release of political prisoners. Others even post photos from inside regime-held Syria from Communist meetings.
I am strongly opposed to Communism, to be clear. That ideology is responsible for more deaths than Nazism and my own parents collectively spent 12 years in the Gulags for opposing this ideology.
