Y’all realise that people in Turkey talk to their relatives daily, right? The family may originally hail from Elazığ, some of the family relocated to Istanbul for work, with younger generation in studying in universities in Eşkisehir, etc. regardless people talk to family daily.

Daily is also really underplaying it. Modern technology has allowed basically hourly, ever-present communication across continents. Turkish Black Mirror would be incredibly tedious.

I remember once buying a phone card and telling the bakkal guy i was going to call my parents. He was like "wait, Americans do that too? i didnt think people in western cultures were that close to their families!"

I, otoh, confirmed all stereotypes (& put my foot in my mouth royally) when my first landlords in Istanbul asked if my parents were sending me money while I studied Turkish. Of course not, I’m in my '30s, I take care of myself, I replied -- and you can guess where this is going…

...yep, they had three kids, all in their thirties, who still lived with them. Oops.

That is such a deeply American reaction though. The industry I work in occasionally mean I crash at my folks for like a week or two between jobs. People are horrified when they hear that, even if I’m making relatively good money for my age and education level.
