Suffering isn’t good or bad in itself. And no, we live in a world where the victim isn’t loved that much. Yes, our death might bring few condemnation tweets but they don’t bring the change we want if we don’t die with a vision and a plan.

Poetry isn’t planning. We can play Um Kalsum’s Anna al-Sha’bu forever but if we don’t know where we are heading and don’t read the events very well, we end up removing a Mubarak and empowering a Sisi. I’m gutted for Sudan but even more that we didn’t learn nothing.

The post-Arab Spring counter revolution is strong. It has allies in the US, Russia & China. It is smarter & more ruthless. Without leadership, organisation & strategy, revolution is not a revolution.

I know Sudan isn’t Egypt and Algeria isn’t Libya BUT we are psychologically exhausted with the misery we already have on our hands. As an Arab poet used to say ‘No tears left to be shed’

The most tragic aspect of the Sudan events is that the stories don’t scare anymore. We follow the events in Sudan as if they were a less violent version of a horror movie we have seen several times before.

I don’t like the term white suprematist. It is like the term ‘Islamist’. It doesn’t tell much, it has a generalising tendency and could have negative PR consequences. BUT, great to see AOC using her charming platform to bring up this much needed question

The post-Ottoman Middle East is a place of perpetual violence. What is scary is that violence (as understood by a Syrian orphan who has lost his entire family to a barrel bomb) isn’t in the past but it is in the now and has a big probability to be in the future too.

If you are 10+ years of age in Yemen, Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan or 25+ In any country in MENA -except Gulf countries-, you most probably have first hand experience with war crimes, genocide, civil war, chemical warfare & ethnic cleansing; all/some of the above.

We, the humans of Middle East, have a very ‘high standard’ of what is violent and what constitutes misery. The meaning a 10 year old girl from Aleppo, Mosul or Gazza assigns to violence is categorically different from her peers in Amsterdam, London or New York.

In an age when ISIS claims responsibility for natural disasters too, I won't blame us Muslims for humanity's obesity problem as well, but Muslims do have to admit that many of us have gotten eating/Ramadan/fasting wrong I explain why, here:
