And Abdel, you know very well that rebel defense had collapsed in northern Aleppo. Had YPG not taken Tel Rifat it had been in SAA hands in 2016.

it was basically given to YPG by Russia. As a buffer between SAA & FSA. And of course to (successfully) create more tension between FSA & YPG. In hindsight it was a mistake by YPG, but the temptation was big, as they hoped to connect the isolated Afrin area to the rest of Rojava

naiv / opportunistic / speculative ok, but IMO not greed. YPG thought (probably rightfully) an isolated Afrin would always be in danger of invasion & blackmail. Taking Tal Rifaat was vital to link up Afrin with Rojava. They just failed to see Assad & Erdogan would never allow it

If the YPG didn’t attack, the FSA of North Aleppo Countryside would have stayed independent, and wouldn’t have had a grudge against Afrin YPG

I agree and many immediately saw the mistake YPG did there. It helped Assad militarily + it helped Russia & Turkey to divide FSA & YPG even more. But I am not sure how much difference it actually made to the course of the war. IMO both Aleppo & Afrin would have fallen regardless

YPG permanently cutting the Azaz-Aleppo road, cut a major supplyline from Turkey to The rebellion, weaken supplies, and gave Assad a launching pad to besiege FSA-Held Aleppo City, from the secured flank

      Replying to @VivaRevolt @4rj1n and

yes, true. But look at the old maps. It was not YPG who cut the supply line. It was SAA / Russia / Iran by lifting the siege of Nubl & Zarhaa. They would never have let rebens besiege those towns again. YPG the of course helped Assads by playing buffer zone

The Rebels would have had the capacity to launch counter offensives on both unsecured flanks, and could have shelled it and even recut the regime breach

      Replying to @VivaRevolt @4rj1n and

possibly, but it is speculative if the rebels would have succeeded vs SAA, considering how poorly they did even vs weak armed YPG (I mean before Turkeys invasion on Afrin). Even less sure this could have saved Aleppo. But YPG involvement definitely speeded up its fall

YPG cutting the Azaz-Aleppo road led to its fall, after the fall of Aleppo,Rebellion fate then depended on ISIS held-Deir Ez Zor not falling, and then Rebels were fooled by de-escalation zones, and then all rebel areas fell, with Idlib soon to be the latest victim

rebels were fooled and divided earlier than that. Not only by Russia. But also several times (without realising it) by Turkey, who is a false friend. What we need to understand is that Turkey, since early of 2016, is a ally of Russia. To Erdogan the rebels are disposable tokens

when Russia / SAA reached Nubl / Zahraa & installed YPG in Tel Rifaat, things changed significantly for Turkey. Suddenly Russia potentially could supply lots of all kinds of weapons to an Afrin YPG linked to PKK. Since then Erdogan had to and actually is playing to Putins tune

I think we can agree that to get YPG into Tal Rifaat was a brilliant move by Russia (it was their textbook) naiv / stupid by YPG, and a disaster for FSA.
