    Hopefully if Turkey buys the S-400s and the US responds, as it should, with sanctions, that will be the moment for both sides to take a deep breath and avoid going any further down this road.

    I agree there's been too much hand wringing, and its come at a cost, but I still worry the bigger risk comes from when we eventually overcompensate.

    If the Turks burn the Russians on S-400, Putin will exact revenge. If the Turks spurn the United States and buy the S-400, American officials will wring their hands and blame themselves.

    2017: "The U.S. government, however, is ill-equipped to deal with an allied government with a leadership cadre that has internalized conspiracy theories and believes that elements of the U.S. government were involved in a failed coup plot.

    Saddest part of this S-400 train crash is how little has changed since December 2017, when it was obvious how this would end up without policy changes.
