In the months after initial 2011 uprising, military treated protests gently and cracked down months later after assessing that enough people were tired of the protests and the revolutionaries looked like the spoilers.

Sudan's military council seems to have taken a page from Egyptian authorities playbook post 2013. Problem is: Egyptian military had enough popular backing to get away with it. Does Sudan's?

Condemn the attack on protestors by Sudanese security forces. This is an outrageous step that will only lead to more polarisation and violence. 1/2

Reports of hospitals and clinics in Khartoum being besieged and attacked defy belief. Those injured in today’s horrific attacks need unhindered access to medical treatment. Medical centres must be a safe space.

Very good profile on MBZ, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, probably, the most influential Arab ruler. While he used to follow US lead, now he has his own agenda. And in many countries, his intervention is aggravating the local conflicts. By

Superb profile. It will be instructive to see if or when MBZ returns to Washington, more than two years after his last visit, in mid-May 2017, to 'prep' President Trump for his summit with Arab leaders in Riyadh.

Insightful profile by on the Machiavellian UAE prince who has beguiled President Trump, commands an outsized military & controls $1.3 trillion in wealth, from a country with fewer citizens than Rhode Island. 'We have created a little Frankenstein.'

Extremely concerned by the heavy gunfire I've been hearing over the last hour from my Residence and reports that Sudanese security forces are attacking the protest sit-in site resulting in casualties. No excuse for any such attack. This. Must. Stop. Now.

Unlike his fellow monarchs, MbZ built up a (comparatively) effective military/intelligence apparatus and an indigenous defense industry. The UAE has a level of hard power that the other Gulf states don't really match.

One thing to take away from this piece: what makes MbZ so powerful isn't just money. All of the Gulf states practice checkbook diplomacy and play the influence game in Washington (albeit with varying degrees of competence).
