My latest post: translation and analysis of an Islamic State al-Naba' editorial from late April on how it portrays its current strategy: "The path of the mujahideen towards victory and tamkeen"

I wonder if Jalaluddin al Tunisi or Abdel Qader al Najdi – the big names sent by Baghdadi to lead the Islamic State in Libya years ago and allegedly still alive – are in that small column of technicals wandering in Libyan Fezzan. Guess they aren't.

Clarification: Islamic State in Libya is not just "30 men". That's more or less the number of fighters in the open acting as a guerrilla group, looking for targets, ready to engage. As far as we know, their quiet network in Libya could be anything from a few dozens up to hundreds

Forecast: under the same favorable circumstances, that single column of the Islamic State in Libya will start to attract a number of volunteers – from Libya and abroad – before the end of summer

In short: the military comeback of the Islamic State in Libya for now is a single column of technicals and 30 men exploiting the void left in Southern Libya by the civil war near Tripoli

And see the same combo vehicle + ZPU anti-aircraft gun near Ghadduwah on April 25 and north of Sabha on May 4

Note: it's the same marauding column of the Islamic State in Libya moving between al Fuqaha and Ghadduwah. See the same guy in April 14 (tagged "Barqah"), April 16 and April 25 (tagged "Fezzan") releases

The six media releases signaling the comeback of the Islamic State in Libya: raids on little towns and road ambushes starting in al Fuqaha on April 14, then moving near Sabha and insisting on Ghadduwah

Islamic State in Libya: six media releases since the start of the civil war near Tripoli on April 4, the first tagged "Barqah" and the others tagged "Fezzan". This is the area of operations for now

Interestingly, they casually announced it now and not in the Wilaya-reports handed to Baghdadi during the video released just eleven days ago. Guess this Wilayah is Pakistan centered, a matter which is almost neglected for now.

I think the current dream of the Islamic State in Libya is, under the right circumstances, move itself somewhere near the frontline between GNA and LNA. Maybe they'll succeed with more fragmentation, more chaos, prolonged clashes or the confrontation going deeper in Tripoli

The Islamic State in central Libya in April/May: setting houses on fire (punishment), killing selected people (fear), kidnapping people for ransom (money), liberating fighters from jail. Plan is quite clear, isn't it?

Islamic State in Libya claiming an attack in Ghudwa, 70 km south of Sebha. Fourth announcement since the beginning of the civil war around Tripoli (and after three monts of silence). Operational tempo increasing. Same cell that attacked al Foqaha in early April or a second cell?

Between Ramadan 2012 and Ramadan 2013 the Islamic State in Iraq attacked prisons to free its men in a year long campaign named “Breaking the walls” - and strengthened its ranks. Same in Libya now

I think Al Baghdadi took this risky step out of necessity. Too many dissenting voices within the Islamic State, contesting his leadership since a while - and then the loss of territory

Al Baghdadi now accepting a risk he accepted only once when the Islamic State was in control of wide swaths of territory
