Turkey's Garanti scales back syndicated loan, borrowing $784 million Garanti becomes the latest Turkish banks to borrow less from international investors as interest rates increased and demand fell. It's probably about currency risk as well

This is probably one of the most important breaking news stories you'll read from Turkey this year. The failure of Turkey's bank rescue plan has potentially very serious implications for the country.

Turkey's Bad-Loan Talks In Deadlock as Banks and Investors Clash Not a great start to Turkey’s efforts to strengthen its banks. Banks and investors couldn’t even agree on what a bad loan is... (?!)

Meanwhile, with the budget in a terrible state, the AKP announces that public transport will be completely free in Istanbul during Ramadan

So Turkey’s government, for the sake of credibility, needs to revise its budget goal or announce how it will meet the current one (latter looks impossible).

So Turkey has another massive budget deficit in April -- 18.3 billion liras. Total = 54.5 billion liras for Jan-April, 68% of AKP's goal of 80.6 billion. If it wasn't for a 37 billion-lira central bank payout in January, Turkey would already have exceeded its target Woeful

I would have expected at least , basically Turkey's FT, to have published more than this on THY: THY ilk çeyrekte 1.25 milyar TL zarar açıkladı. Geçen yıl aynı dönem zarar 314 milyon TL olmuştu. And where are reports from foreign media...too busy i guess...

The Turkish authorities doing everything they can do to support the lira aside from what they actually should do which is raise the benchmark 1week repo rate from 24%. Unfortunately on that front they likely still have their hands tied behind their backs.

Potemkin polls are not democracy Great read from the Guardian Editorial Board. It sums up how elections aren't always about democracy. They become a useful tool for autocrats provided, that is, they win.

Despite key rate constant at 24%, TRY deposits has come down to around 20% and rates on bank loans have dropped significantly from a peak of above 35% to just above 20%. Our view on the recent backdoor stimuli:

For one, I’m growing tired of people analyzing whether Turkey is still a democracy under Erdogan & that somehow he has to prove it. Clearly it is not. This election travesty has shown it once more. Erdogan = Putin = Maduro (And they are all best mates). Can we move on please?

I would add: CHP needs to force the YSK to announce the rules of the game beforehand (because the elections law is not the “rules” apparently). E.g. Will policemen from other cities be able to vote? Will stamps on party logo be accepted? Who can/can’t be ballot box workers?
