Counterpoint: your definition of a "satisfying character arc" is woefully limited, and your undying loyalty to your own preconceptions is making your viewing experience far worse than it has to be. You don't like having your expectations subverted? Have fewer expectations.https://twitter.com/themandowolf/status/1125932277207318529 …

There’s a difference between “subverting expectations” and “pulling shit out of your ass.”

Okay, you know how a lot of the TLJ haters always go "ehh subverting expectations is stupid!" but they usually have ulterior motives for hating TLJ? ...GOT fans are actually right on this one after tonight's episode. It was kind of bullshit.
-
Basically, tonights GOT didnt subvert expectations... it pretty much just ignored seasons of character development and character logic just to have a shocking and needlessly horrific moment.
-
Every other episode this season, good or bad, was at least trying to have fun. And I kind of respected that, since I knew we were never getting GRRM's plot. But this... this was just needlessly dark and gruesome.

I do twinge at this pushback against "subverting expectations" because it does feel like audiences want their films/TV to be as safe as possible.
-
But it's not like I don't see where they're coming from, in our scary and uncertain times it can feel like entertainment needs safe outcomes because the world outside isn't giving us much.

To help clear things up: People were expecting a story about how power and war corrupts, because it's a fantasy piece, to end with peace, love, and rock 'n roll.
