    THIS. If someone supports a side, it DOESNT mean he is its master. Ottomans supported dutch protestant rebels fighting for freedom of their homeland in XVI cent. If this happened now, there would be idiots calling them "islamist proxies created by Ottomans to destabilize Europe".

    The battle Afghans fought against soviet occupation was their own, whether the US had supported it or not the Afghans had to fight. It was their land, freedom and their values at stake & not those of Americans.

    Exactly, thats the primary problem. Also from what I was able to see, american dumb policy gives opposite effect. Iranian people, who would normally dislike government policy, are feeling attacked by sanctions and start to feel solidarity with govt...

    This is what entire battle would look like if it isn't prevented by some state actors... Fierce rebel defence, heroic counterattacks with stunning success ultimately broken by indiscriminate cowardly bombings.

    Although i dont believe in big wars happening now, thats a good point. Only reason that could cause a real international war in ME now are regimes fearing whats inside their countries more than whats outside... Willing to run away into war from internal problems

    Another regime that's several years past its expiry date would happily oblige since such a war would also be its salvation. They'll be able to draw upon nationalistic narratives after their religious ones expired. Take a guess.
