    I don't think KSA thought it could stop Arab Spring when it decided to intervene (Feb-Mar 2012). Imv motivations were: 1. curb Islamist (esp. MB) influence within Syrian insurgency 2. Prevent accusation of letting down Syrian Sunnis while they were massacred by Asad's militias

    Hot take - in the fullness of time it will be understood that the Saudi intervention in Syria was more concerned with stopping the Arab Spring than it was about toppling Assad.

    Important to note that Russia's 'success' in the Middle East has little to do with its *much overstated* 'smarter/better knowledge/understanding' of the region, but more to do with lower expectations, narrower interests, smaller constituencies, greater ruthlessness etc.
