Such as? I think the main reason is that rebels for long time outnumbered the loyalists and received weapons of which other insurgencies could only dream of, e.g. Tows. Or equipment such as jammers, encrypted devices, night vision goggles.

Yes, that is the main reason for the suffering. Syria isnt a militarized society with freely available weapons. The Syrian state would have mercilessly crushed a weaponless insurgency. This would have been awful, but would have costed less suffering.
