My mother at the anniversary ceremony yesterday. Her father, a top leader in the Dutch resistance, saved thousands of people, including jews by creating falsified identity cards. However, a traitor betrayed him, and he was arrested with 27 others on 13 June 1944.pic.twitter.com/Y7JnxdC47l
Only six of the 28 people that were arrested by the Nazi's survived the war. Guus van Wilgenburg was executed on 4 September 1944. Also another member of the resistance Johannes Hessels was executed. After the war, the traitor was arrested and was jailed for 10 years.
The wife of Guus van Wilgenburg only heard about his execution late May 1945... few weeks after the liberation of the Netherlands from the Nazi's. G. van Wilgenburg was only 35 years old.
