Mystery Island in Dazed and Confused and Mad Men

I know that this has been brought up before, but I'm the guy who originally brought it up, i,e I basically found it.

Mad Men: http://i4.minus.com/iblZdG4IGSGnYb.png (S02E03)

That island apparently doesn't exist.

I know it could be a logo, but here's the thing... I searched a ton of google images of different globe brands and cannot find one that uses this as a logo or legend.

If anyone can find the brand/manufacturer that uses this as their logo/legend I would be interested. May take a lot of googling, and looking up different globe makers, if you are up for it.

They're two different globes (notice the green colours), so they're deliberately done this way. Could be a phantom landmass put there by whichever prop company that makes those, as a signum of some sort.

I'll keep my eyes open for any retail globes with this feature.

It's Taured.

It looks like a topographical legend.

Not an island. The southern Indian Ocean and southern Pacific Ocean are common places for globes and maps to place their legends, logos, and other information. This is what you're seeing here. In the Mad Men picture you can even make out a square border and some text below the logo, likely the scale and map information.

There are probably tens if not hundreds of thousands of English-language globes out there, with updated versions produced all the time as geographic and geopolitical features change regularly. I understand you did some googling but it is totally likely and reasonable you just didn't come across this particular globe.

If it is common to put the logo there, then where is a pic of one?

I couldn't find the exact same ones in these films but posted some examples of this placement below. Some in slightly different places and some in nearly exactly the same place. Globes have all sorts of information on them and that spot is one of the few without many or any significant features that might be covered up by text, title, legend, compass rose, etc.

Here's one in the southern Indian Ocean east of Africa: http://www.the-declaration.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/globe-history-786x1024.jpg

Here's one with the title information off the African coast and the compass Rose just west of Australia: http://thumbs4.picclick.com/d/l400/pict/231469606327_/Leroy-M-Tolman-Replogle-Globe-Oak-Base-World.jpg

Here's another with the title illustration in the southern Indian Ocean: http://thumbs2.picclick.com/d/l400/pict/301111337629_/World-Globe-Country-Map-270mm-Diameter-360-Rotation.jpg

Same: http://thumbs2.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mwtLMWGnEPXtv29bwoBUpRQ.jpg

This one has the scale information and other text in the relevant location, similar to the Mad Men globe: http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NzI5WDgwMA==/z/7x0AAMXQrhdTRrWD/$_35.JPG

Illustration west of Australia: http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/world-globe-244092.jpg

Another logo: http://cdn3.volusion.com/bstu5.rxjt6/v/vspfiles/photos/CG-204083-2.jpg?1374843928

Another, a little tougher to see but similar to some above: http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/world-globe-australia-3259018.jpg

Another: http://openphoto.net/volumes/TALUDA/20080509/openphotonet_World%20globe1.JPG

Another: https://img1.etsystatic.com/025/0/6677928/il_340x270.650209561_opxz.jpg

There are quite a few others but hopefully this gets the gist across. My guess is the one in your pictures are produced by a prop company, but it could also just be some regular retail globe, as well.

that mystery island appears also in the Simpsons S06xE16 - Bart vs. Australia: http://i.imgur.com/G4sEPYY.jpg and I also found it on this old map: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4e/Nicolas_Desliens_Map_%281566%29.jpg

Interesting, maybe ask in /r/geography? Or even /r/whatisthisthing?

Did you find that screen shot or did you notice that yourself and take it? That's a nice find.

level 1

Does it appear in any other Mad Men episodes?

Second link is broken. I get page cannot be displayed. However, I clearly remember this as being on globes as a land mass. I always thought there was something there. Either Tasmania, or New Zealand, in my internal globe, and was kind of taken aback to find their true locations a while back, and nothing there. Not sure how an entire land mass could exist in alternate universes, but... yeah, I remember that.. And that's how it was shaped. I'd also like to note, that that shape is not nearly as stylish as the others containing compasses or legends. Pretty weird.
