If this is against the rules, feel free to delete, mods. I really do appreciate everything the Firefox devs have done... and I know it must be hard making money off of OSS. I've been a Firefox user ever since NETSCAPE FREAKING 3.0. Yes, Netscape more or less led to Mozilla Browser Suite, which led to Phoenix-->later Firebird-->later Firefox and I was there every damn step of the way singing your praises to everyone would hear me. I was telling people about your popup blocking back when popups were ruining everything. I was telling them about Adblock plus when that became a thing. I thought Chrome was overrated as all hell and I told people that Firefox was clearly better, even as you sought to turn the thing into a Chrome clone.

But.

I just switched to Waterfox this morning and couldn't be happier. So far the UX seems to be EXACTLY like Firefox except:

  • it doesn't phone home your data to Mozilla (or anyone else)

  • it supports unsigned extensions (maybe there's a way to turn this off somewhere if you're particularly paranoid about security. Me, I basically trust myself to not be stupid.)

  • it supports legacy extensions that Firefox no longer supports (I have self destructing cookies again! Woo!) which are available with manual install or builtin if you install this extension

  • it doesn't have the proprietary Pocket

  • it doesn't lock you out of changing some settings in about:config.

That last one is important because apparently there was a workaround for this bug, but people were reporting that it work for them because they're starting to prevent you from changing certain about:config settings in some builds. This is ridiculous! Why would I want to have this padded-corner Fischer Price crap, a browser designed for morons? The whole point of Firefox used to be choice, control and customizability. If I wanted Chrome I would've installed Chrome.

Enough is enough. Installed Waterfox, found out it's (almost) everything that I wished Firefox still was, couldn't be happier. It doesn't have this bug, but even if it had suffered the bug, I could've fixed it in about:config on all of my family's boxen instead of finding out that the hood was welded shut. Hopefully the Firefox devs will get the message some day. Until then, I'm out.

I don't know what happened, but my addons are back and functional. I am using the normal Firefox Quantum browser and somehow while browsing the net, I looked up at my toolbar, and they were all there and working. Im 100% sure I did nothing.

Has this happened to any of you?

If so, has Mozilla then fixed the issue!?

If this has somehow not happened to many, then I don't know if you are going to believe me, but then I am genuinely asking, what should I do about this??

I can't be the only one that has experienced this...

Can't look it up myself since I'm at work but could someone give me a rundown on the whole ordeal?

Go to about:config and verify app.normandy.enabled is set to true

Go to Options > Privacy & Security

Under Firefox Data Collection & Use, make sure Allow Firefox to install and run studies is checked.

Now you just need to wait until you receive the studies.

It took about 5 mins after enabling studies before my addons were restored.

I've tried it, enabled it in the Options for all windows, restarted and https://panopticlick.eff.org says I'm still unique

This is using 67b16 (checked in the about box)

Has anyone else tried / had a success? I feel like I've missed something

Was about to jump off Firefox and just go play some video games, then BOOM! All my add-ons were back and working! Thank you Mozilla!

Edit: fixed grammer

Some of you were forced to see the horror of the Internet without an adblocker. some websites that offer your favourite content saw a temporary increase in ad revenue. Some people learned about certificates. Some people made new friends. Mozilla learned from a mistake and got to improve in the way they handle some things. And we all boned up on our maths to work out the difference between PST and BST. Okay, the last one was just me. Though it sucked, we'll rise from the ashes of this debacle like a Fenix! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

What exactly is this study doing to fix the issue? Can someone link to the code? Just curious.

Ain't nothing wrong with my connection.

Regarding the certificate expiration issue affecting addons, it looks like Mozilla is silently fixing this issue via a backdoor to your preferences called "Normandy" that I had no clue about: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19823701

This option is buried in the Privacy and Security menu in Preferences/Options. It's called "Allow Firefox to install and run studies". This option is enabled by DEFAULT! The more you know...

Temporary fix. Works fine on FF 66.03 on Ubuntu 19.04

  1. about:config

  2. Search for: xpinstall.signatures.required

  3. Change from True to False.

Change back later (tomorrow, Monday?) once they have updated their certificate.

A hot fix has been rolled out and may automatically apply for some users. A restart will trigger the plugin scan again.

I shifted to Brave browser and was blown by the performance. FF was stuttering with the dark themes :( Nevertheless, I am glad, I didn't fire up the FF browser in a long time- or else, this would have had decimated me!

I really hope, this is not repeated; I am sure that it would be handled appropriately.

We are standing by but the negative news will push more wannabes to the Chromium market now :(

Desktop versions of Firefox aren't the only ones getting boned. Android is affected as well. Addons on FF Mobile got killed off as well.
