Modeling in Japan

I‘m half Japanese but I live in Switzerland. I‘ve always been interested in modeling in Japan, however since I don’t live there, I haven’t rlly had the opportunity to start anything like that. I got scouted once but from a smaller agency that I was unsure about and eventually turned down. I‘m wondering if anyone has experience with modeling in Japan and if it’s only a good idea to start modeling if you get scouted? I‘ve heard that unless you get scouted, the agency makes you pay huge fees for unnecessary things to get money from you.

I‘m female and 21 years old.

Oh and since I‘m a student I actually feel like I probably should finish my degree first but since with modeling the younger you are the better I also wouldn’t want to wait much longer.

If you get scouted it’s more than likely for porn and you’ll get fucked twice once on camera the other time in the contract

Yes I know they made this illegal but you’ll get pushed into it most girls sign up thinking they are doing just regular modeling then get pressured into sex on camera

If you want to model, why does it have to be in Japan? Why not start in Switzerland? Seems like a long-shot to get scouted for a company on the other side of the world.

Bc unfortunately in Switzerland the model industry is not very successful and there’s no demand for East Asian girls 😅 plus I‘d be too small for European standards. Japan seems to love „Hafus“ and don’t mind models being only 5‘5“. But yeah it sucks living on the other side hahah

Do you speak Japanese?

Yeah I do. (:

Have you considered applying to be a cast member of Terrace House? You clearly are good looking enough, and the girls become well earning models after they leave, with thousands of followers.

Quickest way to jumpstart your career.

Hmm looks interesting actually. I‘ve never heard of this before tbh. Maybe I‘ll check it out - thanks a lot ((:

The show is on Netflix. The last season was in Karuizawa, and the next one will be in Tokyo again. I see a lot of former cast members on magazines and ads around here, and one former cast member became a TV actress. There’s some potential. Take a look :)

There are exceptions to everything but based on what I've seen, at least at your age, unless you look totally Swiss or are exceptionally beautiful or otherwise unique, I doubt there will much interest in you because Japan, well, already has Japanese-looking women. That said, there are half-Japanese-looking people on ads. In any case, modeling anywhere is a hit or miss, and here it is something just about any foreigner can do in addition to teaching English or other work, because the pay sucks. Do some people make a living from modeling only? Yes, they do. Should you count on it? No, but you can always hope, like the rest of us.

Yes, in modeling the younger the better, that's why many girls start at 13 or 14. Sorry to break it to you but 21 in modeling is not young. This doesn't mean you can't model, because people of all ages can, but it's just the reality of the industry.

You don't have to be scouted to model, but be careful with scam "agencies" that will eventually ask you for money. If they do, run! Seems in Japan a lot of scouting is done on Instagram, so you can look into that, too.

Good luck!
