I’m about to get on a plane from Istanbul New Airport and AHaber is on the big screen showing the 9/11 attacks on rotation, somehow linking it to Venezuela via Iraq. A few horrified tourist faces at the imagery, which is fair given we’re all about to get on planes.

AKP really aren’t taking the defeat in Istanbul that well. One month since Ekrem İmamoğlu won and nearly two weeks since he started as Mayor, there are still hundreds of these posters around the city claiming an AKP victory. Time to move on guys.

Turkey should think very hard about taking too hard a stance about Venezuela. The situation is fluid and Turkey has enough geopolitical and economic struggles on its agenda without wading into something happening on the other side of the world. A pause might be in order.

President Erdoğan: "Instead of bringing in experts from outside, we are now a country that exports experts." That is quite the optimistic take on brain drain and being a less attractive market for foreigners.

Not true of imported goods but hotels, taxis, local food and drink, basically the staples of tourism, are now significantly cheaper than comparator cities. God help family and friends who are earning lira though. It’s now recognisably tough to balance books.

A small reflection on prices in Turkey: they are exorbitant when I think with my Turkish brain which used to earn TL but crazy cheap in FX. That is a massive tourism and trade opportunity. It will be squandered if Turkey’s language and posturing isn’t normalised.

AKP’s Electoral Council member says of the Istanbul election that appeals shouldn’t be rushed, “bound by or boxed into a timeline.” Here’s a suggestion: how about we just have a new election in 2024?

Having said that, I too have an English accent. Please continue to read my tweets in that way if it makes them more persuasive for you ;)

The Boğaziçi audience should be embarrassed at applauding him but not just because of what he’s saying. This is a person who is laughed at in the UK for being a bit simple. I get the feeling us Turks are sometimes tricked by an English accent. Trust me, this guy isn’t worth it.

Turkish secularists getting hot and bothered by Hamza Andreas Tzortzis giving a speech at Boğaziçi implying Atatürk was the Devil should calm down. He is an incredibly poor public speaker with a track record of sub-mediocrity. What he says matters not one bit.

Addendum: someone has noted it looks like an American airport. That is not true. It may be a bit boring and lacking in character but it’s significantly better than any US airport I’ve ever used. Seriously, the US seems to hate air travelers with a passion.

Some positives to finish: the taxi off the runway wasn’t as long as others have experienced, passport lines were shorter than Atatürk and there were a lot of people standing around waiting to give info. And perhaps with a lot of good lighting, it could generate more character.

But one poster made me immediately feel at home... Dear Twitter friends, do you remember the fun we had with this poster when it first came out? It’s like a nostalgic gift from an old friend ;)

The parts that were quite aesthetically pleasing were the gates and the entrance. Still incredibly grey but the scale makes them impressive.

It’s only been open a couple of weeks but there is already serious wear and tear on the roofs, the floors and the conveyor belts. I can imagine a lot of this will need to be redone when it starts being fully used (it was very empty today for example).

Seriously, it’s very grey. I’ve seen more colorful ex-Soviet industrial towns.

I just used the new Istanbul Airport for the first time and I have to say, I was really quite underwhelmed. It’s very big, it’s very grey and it seems to have been done on the cheap.

Those guarantees are pretty shitty when no-one uses a bridge or airport that was entirely unnecessary but got built anyway. Thankfully, whilst you can’t (yet) force people to cross a bridge, you can force people to go to jail. Sort of the point of jails.

For anyone who doesn’t get that joke, Turkey gets private companies to build all its infrastructure (usually using public loans) and then promises to pay said companies for a guaranteed usage level irregardless of actual consumers.
