Located on the Pacific coast of central Honshū, Shizuoka Prefecture is home to Mt. Fuji, a well-known symbol of Japan. The prefecture is also blessed with abundant forests and this natural resource enabled a wooden model manufacturing industry to develop and flourish in Shizuoka in the years before and after the Second World War. Following the introduction of the first plastic models to Japan in 1958, many of Shizuoka’s wooden model manufacturers switched to the new medium and continued to evolve into a modern industry. Shizuoka’s hobby manufacturers have not only collectively achieved a dominant share of the domestic Japanese hobby market, but their high-quality products have also helped them become world-famous brands and turn Shizuoka into “The World Capital of Models”. The Shizuoka Hobby Square aspires to showcase the proud tradition of this industry as well as introduce even more people to the enjoyment offered by Shizuoka’s hobby products. The Permanent Exhibition Area features examples of Shizuoka’s historically-significant crafts culture as well as displays of the latest products from the various Shizuoka-based hobby manufacturers. The Event Area will host a variety of different hobby-related events which visitors of all ages can enjoy.
