Obviously if you don’t know them and they swiftly turn out to be a complete moron, “pas geç”. But Twitter, if used in good faith, is a window to amazing intellectual opportunities. We shouldn’t ever forget that in the morass of shit that tends to pervade this hopeless wasteland.

Fair enough... but I didn't start engaging w you (or any of the other people you mention), until we "sorta" knew each other through quotes, references, etc. Replies to people I don't know-or from people I don't know-strike me as a little weird unless they are really substantive
-
I get that. But if you give the right people a chance, they can surprise you. This platform can be awful but, as a constant traveler and man of no single country, it is also a solace that I return to because of a lot of people that I once didn’t know at all.

I've met some of my favorite people in life on twitter!
-
I think Howard might point out (correctly) that you’ve also “met” the worst people too. Twitter is only useful if you’re a great sieve.

Chacun a son goût - but isn’t it the whole point of Twitter to engage with people with whom you might not otherwise do so? People who respond to your tweets do so because they share an interest, whether they agree with your take on it or not. Shared interests are the way forward.
-
Up to a point, yes, and I think you know that I tend to interact with people from all ideologies and viewpoints. However, there is sometimes an expectation that I respond ad infinitum to people who simply can’t expect that monopoly of my time (or who aren’t always “people”).
-
As a person, I understand your reservations. I do, though, feel sad when academics distance themselves from (real) people who share a passion about something but are simply dismissed, like chaff on the wind...
-
I try to engage as much as possible as long as people are generally sincere in requests but in Turkey it’s tricky.
-
I respect that. Everybody’s time is valuable, after all.
