I thought we all start on equal footing and the best of us (regardless of gender) get a seat at the table. I was naive. I was only considering one side of the equation. Here's the other: who gets a seat on the table is decided by those who are already there. They have power.

Like it or not, people hire people who look like them and they can identify with. So, with 68% of tenured faculty at elite public universities being men, the odds are stacked against women (and I can only imagine the skew due to race).https://twitter.com/FreeformTV/status/1116491116910608384 …

I didn't want to go the TT route for unrelated reasons. It just makes me sad that this is the state of affairs in this place that I had on a pedestal for so many years, and I am so mad for the women who are amazing and want to be in academia.

Like Jones and Emerson, I have hope that the culture will change for the better. But unlike them, I am realizing early on that hope alone is not enough. Women can't afford to be polite about it anymore, and men can't pretend that this is not a problem. We all need to push back.

It took me a while to realize these truths too. Most of the time, we need to experience it before we believe it. I have experienced it and am experiencing right this minute. It’s demoralizing, unjust, unfair, etc.

Yes! We have to experience it to believe it. I was raised to believe that with hard work and persistence I can be anything I want to be. So when someone tells you about gender discrimination before you have experienced it, it’s unbelievable because it’s ridiculous.

And I’m really sorry for what you’re going through! I hope you have a good support system.

Women who strive for equality with men have their sights set too low.

This thread about gender discrimination in academia, and you thought that it is a good idea to come over and tell us what we are doing wrong. People like you are part of the problem.

I think that was probably snark..but blocked him anyway. Doesn't add anything to the conversation.

Same! Except I believed them that they experienced discrimination, but I'd been lucky enough to be born into a generation that was discrimination-free.

Academic institutional hierarchies are like the boarding classes on United. There is reasonable gender parity in Basic economy, regular economy, and even economy plus. Disparities become discernible in Business. By the time you get to Premier 1k, it’s patently obvious.

Women tend to get discriminated against more as they move up the ladder and become a threat. Have seen it in law, banking, journalism. Early career women are treated fairly equally, but by year 5-6 they experience discrimination.
-
I experienced it as an intern. And I was told im too competitive.

This line hit me like a TON of bricks re: microaggressions and subtle and unsubtle forms of discrimination: ‘A ton of feathers still weighs a ton.’

Same here. I thought naively that all it takes is persistence and hard work that goes with some talent. I did not account for running into the brick wall of “you don’t look like you belong at the table”

Me too. I was trained in a heavily female dominated field, so while ignoring the gendered history of home economic trades, I physically didn’t see discrimination towards me or other women. I am embarrassed to say how naive I was. I had to see it first hand.

It is interesting how the experience is so different based on where you are in the power structure. I had no idea how bad it could be until I was in a toxic, hostile department where every trope was played out. Fortunately, I got another job & got out.
