At the very least, he’s guilty (like Burgon with his “Zionism is the enemy of peace” comment) of being insufficiently clear and precise. When you’re talking about as complex and fraught an issue as this, it’s worth taking the time to avoid lazy discourse.

Well, yes. I agree - and I accept my initial tweet was lazy in that regard too. But also, the reporting of this has been disengenuous.

Disingenuousness is a constant in this debate, on both “sides”.

He's laying the intellectual groundwork that ends up justifying a certain type of antisemitic rhetoric. The thing we see now where people make excuses for others who may refer to the "Zionist controlled media" - there's a lot to be read into what he said there. He's a clever man.

Those people don’t constitute “the Zionist movement”, and what’s the evidence that they have any substantial “influence” over what “the media” says about Israel?

I am not especially inclined to give the benefit of the doubt (on this, or any other matter of politics) to Milne.

It's all about justifying an outlook which explains away very suspect ideas. Saying Zionists control the media isn't antisemitsm, it's "exaggerated" - they don't quite control it but they nearly do. It's an intellectual get out card people who want/need/believe antisemitic ideas.

Hey Marlon. Seamus Milne has said many things that are problematic in my opinion. I take Daniel's point about his descriptor of the "Zionist Movement", but he's not saying they have control of the media here - in fact he's saying that the claims that they are, are exaggerated

Easy Steve, I think that's the point, it's exaggerated but it's not antisemitic to say such a thing in his mind. And the fact he's wrong about it being even exaggerated still plays to a way of thinking about a group with more power and influence than they actually have.

That could easily be politic language. I'm not sure that it necessarily leads to where you are saying. There are many things to criticise Milne for, and he has said some awful things on this subject - I just think it's best to stick to clear examples.
