It's ridiculous that an event with 5200+ people would spit in the face of those who volunteer their talent by not offering them their admission, citing budget issues, and spend money on some billboards.

Talent is not free. You wouldn't ask someone to draw something for free. You wouldn't ask someone to make a fursuit for free. It's ridiculous to ask that someone perform for free, especially when you have the coin

I urge other, larger events to start focusing on those who help make their production possible, and stop pinching every penny you can. As a Fandom of artists, it's important that we set an example that people are worth something, and not required to perform for free

Publicly dunking on other conventions isn't a good look, guys. You're supposed to be in this game together. I DJ and I don't care if I get comped. I don't get comped for my panels and they're an hour long too.
-
We are in this game together, which is why we are striving to be fair to our performers by compensating them for their work. I'm glad that you're in this to work for free, but hopefully someday you won't have to c:
-
If you're in this together, act like it. Your attitude is unnecessary. You misunderstand me - I don't *want* to be paid to DJ at a community non-profit event. I want to contribute to the community. That's why I do it. I'm not interested in chasing fifty bucks for an hour's work
-
You're welcome to that opinion, however I will be compensating my performers with a registration, courtesy for the talent they bring to the event. I hope in time others follow suit. Thanks for reaching out to me!
-
Man, that wasn't dismissive *at all*

Honestly this surprises me. I have never heard of any convention comping the registration for DJs. As a fandom DJ I'm used to pay the registration in full - due to the extremely high competition and few available time slots we as DJs are in a very bad position to negotiate at all
-
Most fandoms (except ours) and literally all music events big and small pay/comp their djs/artists there is no excuse to not comp djs for their talent and time also just because your experience as a dj has lead you to be comfortable not being paid doesn't mean we have to be
-
Especially with an event that has a surplus of funds

RF comped our DJ I think and Panelist that did 4 or more hours got comps too
-
Absolutely. When you're an event of a decent size, you take care of those who help stage your production. We need to return to respect our artists and performers, and in return they will give us a good show.

While that's cool... What makes the DJ different than someone who runs a panel or series or panels? The artists that make their theming? The fursuiters who put on parades and events? The other volunteers? Almost everyone at a furry event is participating creatively!
-
Wow your con doesn't compensate the people doing the theme materials? They could come to furlandia, where an artist isn't taken advantage of
