    Turkish historian here says Atatürk’s adopted daughter was actually expressing her own thoughts by making a comparison with women rights in the US. Video is cut so I wasn’t sure

    Ambassador Grew asks Afet Hanım what she thinks about the American women. Feminism in Turkey was related to feminism in the US. Students and alumnae of Arnavutkoy American College for Girls played an important role in the feminist movement in Turkey.

    Ataturk and US Ambassador Joseph Grew in 1930. Ataturk’s adopted daughter Afet Inan translates Grew’s remarks, “Turkish women won’t be satisfied with rights they got so far. I’m sure soon they’ll have right to elect and to hold office” ( Ratified in 1934)

    Turkey’s election board rules that a number of pro-Kurdish HDP mayor-elects who were expelled from public service by presidential decrees cannot get their mandates. Instead, the candidates who got second highest votes would be the mayors, (mostly ruling AK Party members)
