Though, in fairness, they would hire different Turkish staff.

“A lot of [the AKP’s] discourse and legitimation has been based on the ballot box... That’s good when you’re winning elections, but what happens when you start losing them?” I spoke with on the state of Turkey’s (non)democracy.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that Imamoglu is allowed to govern Istanbul, but the HDP is still closed out and that Imamoglu's authority is whittled away. What then? The opposition needs unity and it needs a long-term strategy. I'm not convinced it has either.

More immediately, what should the opposition do about attacks on elected HDP officials? CHP and Iyi Party accepted "trustees" and prosecution of HDP officials before? Can they really accept them again? This means more than a little wrestling with the opposition's own demons

Whether to boycott or not is an important question, but needs to be framed in larger context: what is the opposition's game plan for survival? What areas of independence can be carved out? These questions can only be addressed if opposition is steely-eyed about Turkey's reality

Some discussion of potential boycott should there be a re-run of the Istanbul elections. I am agnostic. That said, this is what I wrote about the opposition's unpalatable choices last year.

There are statements out today unqualifiedly opposing Israeli annexation from four of the staunchest pro-Israel House Dems, and from nine mainstream Jewish organizations including and my own . People here are paying close attention to this issue.

Ilhan Omar is a politician, it’s fine to criticize her or push back against policies forcefully if you disagree with them. The fact that people can’t do this without characterizing her as an alien or even tying her to the 9/11 attacks shows how much deep racism is out there.
