Short thread: 1) So I really want to underline that I have the maximum of respect for the writers of @AfrinpostArabic, @vdcnsy, @afrinactivists and Afrin Media Center (fb) and their local contacts. They do an indescribably important job.
2) Just scroll for the articles and news they published last months (and also click on the links, there is a lot of more text behind it)! The local contacts risk their lives to bring the news out of the hell. And the writers of the accounts ->
3) invest (in cases like @AfrinpostArabic or @vdcnsy ) several hours each day to write about a situation that could barely be more depressing and hopeless. I know what I talk about, since I'm trying to reconstruct the masses of crimes at @Rojava_News_
4) Only, I have to admit that apart from lack of time I get depressed so badly from reading about these cruelties from Efrîn for hours, that I always need a few days of break from this after it. But they don't take a break, they report and record it without stop.
5) Now, reporting about this isn't exactly a rewarding task either. Because sure, who wants to read this depressing stuff non-stop? Due to this, tweets about Efrîn aren't too popular already among my 3.5k followers. But I have a far bigger reach than most of them (wrongly so).
6) But @AfrinpostArabic writes articles like the one below, and they don't even have 100 followers. 7) Finally, one a bit more personal thing, but which I also view as very important: Some months ago I announced I would create a map covering the crimes by the occupation committed in Efrîn. I thought that during the Semester break, I might find the time to do that.
8) However, I had to realize, that this is a job BY FAR too big for one single person doing it as a hobby. Even putting the immense amount of crime news aside (which you can't), there is still the search for the locations of the villages, cross-checking sources, ->
9) translating and of course recording the sources in a document. Also, there is the problem, that there are so many crimes, you can't get to the oldest crimes anymore, because at some point, twitter doesn't load any further. And the occupation got implemented barely a year ago.
END) To conclude, the whole topic is without doubt depressing, but simply it is incredibly important to observe and report from this hell on earth. ... and maybe, one day, even the News outlets of the Global North will report about it too. Will they?
