    Since MBS's ascension there have been 3 waves of arrests targeting specific groups that had established a degree of social or economic authority distinct from the state: Islam-oriented activists, rival business/royal elites, women activists. Today represents a 4th wave.

    One thread running through many, though not all, of these varied arrests: the ability to appeal to the critical youth constituency. MBS - and by extension the new Saudi state - wants that field all to himself.
