It's a mistake for Labour to keep their commitment to ending free movement. Doing so not only implicitly reinforces deeply entrenched anti-migration narratives, it will also mean a significant expansion of border controls. The focus should be levelling up non-EU migrant rights

This is a great thread debunking AKP’s claim of election fraud in Istanbul. I think one thing that everyone can agree on is AA should be challenged to admit where exactly they get their data from - if it’s from AKP observers, this procedure should be halted for future elections..

Today is the death anniversary of Sabahattin Ali, one of Turkey's great writers; the author of Madonna in Fur Coat, among other books. He was imprisoned more than once. He died/was killed while trying to flee to Europe in 1948. May his memory be a blessing, ruhu şad olsun.

In conclusion, I'd say fear of kayyum was a major factor in TKP's victory, and much like Sirnak led to a number of HDP voters to abandon their party in elections. See my thread on Sirnak election for discussion on kayyum dynamic in local elecs:

HDP's anger is summed up by party spokesman Saruhan Oluç tweet, accusing TKP of working with the state power to defeat their party. Personally, while disappointing for HDP, I think such anger is misplaced as no reason why TKP + HDP can't work as allies /13

Since TKP's victory, theres been number of musings over what this means for Turkish lefts split on pro/anti K.movement. My particular favorite tweet in reaction claimed TKPs victory wasn't just a defeat of HDP, but also of Laclau, Bookchin and Negri /12

TKP stem from a split-off from Turkish Workers Party in 60/70s + are associated with the 'Gelenek' tradition. They're often seen as opposed to the K. movement and despite a brief electoral pact in the 90s, have not generally worked in co-operation w. pro-Kurdish parties /11

Similarly, in other districts, due to new law allowing soldiers to vote in polling booths where they are stationed, many HDP voters voted for CHP to prevent AKP from winning. This was certainly the case in Hozat + Mazgirt where AKP performed strongly (winning latter district) /10

Looking at the district vote, given Maçoğlu's success, people were surprised that TKP lost to CHP in Ovacık - TKP candidate Hayati Güngören had been arrested during election campaign so one factor may have been fear he wouldn't be released (much like fear of kayyum in merkez) /9

The votes shift between 2014 elections and now suggest that TKP increased share of votes by 20% by taking roughly 10% each from both HDP and CHP supporters. This is something that was confirmed to me by someone close to TKP in an interview /8

HDP's campaign focused on the illegitimacy of the kayyum and HDP's candidate said he saw the election as a chance to reject the kayyum entirely - much like across south-east, HDP's campaign focused on need to increase votes to show ppl refuse to accept kayyum /7

The demoralization of the kayyum effected HDP's campaign, which was contrasted with Maçoğlu's success. A report by also highlighted how many would vote for TKP because they feared the kayyum returning if HDP won /6

In contrast to Maçoğlu's dynamic municipality, Dersim centre was unfairly stripped of its HDP mayor in 2016 due to the 'kayyum'-the Ankara-appointed trustee that replaced the HDP municipalities across the southeast. As a result,Ankara has controlled the municipality for 2 yrs+ /5
