In sum, imho there is no easy choices left for the AKP as the govt finds itself in between a rock and a hard place, forced to make a "sophie's choice" so-to-say. 2nd path is obviously the more sensible one but it is completely against the party's political reflexes.

    (a) Govern at all costs (get Istanbul & even Ankara back) & fight a last stance battle to survive through its devastating economic outcomes or (b) let this one slip & try to weather waves of corruption exposés that are sure to follow (in midst of a massive recession, one may add)

among the "higher echelons" may be about what those "costs" would actually be and whether govt. is even capable to endure them. So possible disagreement at that level wouldn't be so much about democratic mandate as about potential outcomes of two unpleasant courses of action:

thus I respectfully disagree w/ that such a division somehow reaches up to AKP's "highest echelons", for they are precisely the ones who are in the know and, therefore, constitute the core of the latter camp (i.e. govern at all costs). However, the source of divergence +

those who constitute overwhelming majority of AKP supporters and, in fact, are *not* direct beneficiaries of the massive networks of patronage that are the municipalities (esp. IBB) maintain a naive belief in the illusion that govt. relies on or respects to democratic legitimacy.

in this particular case, ignorance is truly a bliss: those who are truly in the know of potential scale and scope of the dirt likely to pour out of Istanbul and other municipalities (as well as the opposition's willingness to reveal it) have reason to pick the latter, whereas +

well, that stinks: no access to YSK until results announced in Official Gazette (against which there is no way to object, not even via Supreme Court)

last official update done over 40min ago, showing 4k difference (of about 9m total vote). No new update since govt candidate’s claim for victory. Curiously, data elsewhere (incl. AKP HQ as pictured above) show opposition lead though...

Still only 41% ballot boxes counted in CHP stronghold of Besiktas, 51% in Kadikoy. If it's really just 40,000 or so votes in it in , this is going to go down to the wire.
