    Unclear whether they are stepping back. A number of prominent govt-friendly names have come out against this initiative/rhetoric. But major TV station (A Haber) and newspapers (Sabah, Yeni Safak, Star, etc) are still pushing it.

    And yes, this has worrying implications in the real world. Two days ago, a government supporter told me Kurds in big cities had "committed treason" against Erdogan by voting for the opposition. Another said "terrorists stole” the election in Istanbul.

    Reports that law being crafted that will set a cap on value of tenders that municipalities can decide independently on. Anything above set limit would as per mulled law be authorized/decided by presidency according to a very solid Turkish journalist.

    According to this report (from before the election), Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has debts of 22 billion liras (trebled since 2014). Last year it had a deficit of 3.7 billion liras.

    I covered 5 elections in during 2011-2016. Of those 2014 local elex (when Gokcek beat (?) Yavas in Ankara) & June 2015 general elex (where Davutoglu lost AKP’s majority & Erdogan forced snap polls) were the most surprising & strangest. But last night topped it all.

    Absurdity in local elections: pro-govt newspapers this morning declare AKP victory over key city , as do TV channels, so it’s likely that a lot of Erdogan supporters believe their candidate actually won Istanbul.

    +1 With the alliance system applied differently in each province almost impossible to draw a useful national picture. Best to just look at individual district/province/metropolitan races.
