Labour will never win without the liberal left as part of its coalition. It will also never win without some people that don’t like the liberal left. Peace

It's a terrible non-apology. And it's not poor phrasing any more than "cultural marxism". The only possible defence here is ignorance, which, if you're a committed antifascist, is hard to believe.

Should the Guardian also apologise? (genuine question)pic.twitter.com/C17weDDHaN

Soros also supported many projects in Hungary. Does it mean Orban's references to him are correct? It's a dog whistle, not a critique.

That's why its about phrasing & patterns of use. Yes, the left should be careful pointing to Soros-funding (+ I don't think Soros-funding has much explanatory power/ is a distraction). But assuming the worst because someone cites the rich funder that the Guardian cited is unfair.

Again I don’t understand this “tropes” argument. If Soros is a funder, then he’s a funder. It’s like constantly caveating a reference to Salman Abedi by saying “btw, most terrorist attacks in the UK aren’t by Muslims.” Yeah I know that, just as I know most Jews aren’t financiers!

So no need to be afraid of your own shadow on this issue Michael. But even if you are, I think commending unnecessary apologies like this only serves to obscure the debate and frighten people away from making pertinent (and entirely inoffensive) comments.
