I Just don't get how anyone is gonna start in this field in the UK without an expectation of casually law breaking (Operating for at least a while without convincingly being able to say one is a researcher/analyst/journalist) I'm sure Police are sensible, but it's concerning.

Wait, what law?
-
If you are a random citizen, one click on IS Media could *POTENTIALLY* lead to prison time. Journalists, Researchers etc have exemptionshttps://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/02/13/uk_counter_terror_act_royal_assent/ …

That is infuriating bullshit
-
Oh yeah. It's pretty clear the law is designed to catch suspects that they can't get any other way (For example, they'd have to be watching what you are doing anyway), but still...
-
I don’t know the details on the law but I do feel like that’s exactly the kind of law most ripe for abuse.

That’s mind boggling, as a US citizen I can’t imagine that. That’s such a basic violation of liberty.
-
Kek, you have people shot in the back by Police on the regular You have the same problems, just in a different way.
-
Oh yeah by no means are we perfect. I just appreciate knowing I won’t be prosecuted for thought crimes.
-
You'll just have 10 9x19mm holes for holding a phone lol

Genuinely, one of the reasons I decided to study in France instead of the UK is the awful laws surrounding terrorism-related content that seem to only be getting more draconian and wrong-headed. It's got to go.
-
Realistically, I don't think it will end up doing much. It's for the "can't get them on anything else" crowd. Spain has similar legalisation. But still. (You'd be exempted, as am I, as you are a researcher too, ofc)
