Bassel Khartabil conceived this project, and even chose its name, before being murdered in Assad's death camps. Now his widow Noura and other Syrian activists have launched it to support the families of those forcibly disappeared. A very important endeavor to boost and amplify.https://twitter.com/nouraghazilaw/status/1108035242395340800 …

My point isn't apologetic: there's not excuse to what the GW Bush administration did in Iraq. It's rather that the "original sin" line of thinking is lazy: it finds the source of all evil in a single event rather than in long-term historical processes

It suggests that before it was committed, things were juste fine (before the Original Sin there was the Garden of Eden). It also suggests that hadn't it been committed, things would still be fine, which is absurd.

The Iraq invasion was an indefensible decision that had many disastrous consequences, but I very much dislike the expression "original sin".https://twitter.com/joshua_landis/status/1107426577099509760 …

Note that Agha & Malley reserve essentialist clichés for Sunnis: in their narrative, Iranians are strategic actors that seize opportunities, whereas Saudis are "ascetic Wahhabis" and Turks are "statist neo-Ottomans"https://twitter.com/DanielWickham93/status/1105556540507996160 …

Because, here goes the reasoning, if an "Islamist opposition" unsupported by "ordinary Sunnis" captured (quite easily at first) most of rural and suburban Syria, then the people who live there are probably not "ordinary Sunnis".

Agha & Malley's conflation of the entire insurgency with "Islamists" echoes a talking points pushed by pro-Assad spin doctor "Cyrus" "Malik" (aka "Mahboubian"), according to whom suburban and rural Syrian Sunnis are collectively guilty of extremism

2. that the insurgency has enjoyed widespread popular support among what Malley & Agha call "ordinary Syrian Sunnis"

This spurious claim only makes sense if 1. you deliberately ignore that leadership of Syrian military is almost entirely Alawite except for a handful of Sunni tokens, and that the regime's best units are essentially Alawite too
Show this threadThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo -
This is an easily recognisable regime talking point that's been promoted by pro-Assad spin doctors: Syrian conflict is actually a war between moderate Sunnis ("ordinary Syrian Sunnis") and extremist Sunnis ("Islamist opposition").

"It was a choice based on the mistaken conviction that ordinary Syrian Sunnis hoped the Islamist opposition would prevail over the Assad regime because of its atrocities."
