Ticket for the journey from Podgorica to Belgrade costs 22€, 2nd class only. Today it's been running with 4 carriages, all Montenegrin, all compartments. Unfortunately there was no restaurant car, but I'm not sure whether this is something temporary, or common during low season.pic.twitter.com/obkYASN1U3

It's a really long journey, and as much as the landscape is wonderful, it's 11 hours long. I'd suggest to do Belgrade to Podgorica trip first by night train. 40€ in a double sleeper. We were 3 hours late, but this meant I got a sneak peek of the most scenic part of the journey.pic.twitter.com/vEi8U1QxD6

I'd recommend NOT to go in couchette. Crowded and seemed very uncomfortable. Sleeper cars probably are the same from when the line was opened in the 70s, but nevertheless super comfortable and spacious for only 15€ more. Overnight border formalities conducted onboard & with easepic.twitter.com/Ea9ArJ2nEk

Stunning shots. I tried to travel by train within Croatia a few years back, but couldn't make it work. Buses then were woeful, now can be booked with Flixbus. When I finally got on a train in Zagreb to head to Trieste via Villach, it was such a welcome sight!

Train travel in the Balkans still has that charm that can't be seen elsewhere in Western Europe. Chaotic and slow, but beautiful and authentic.

Done it a couple of years ago, one of the best! How crowed was the train? Any catering / restaurant?
-
I was expecting a 6 or 7 carriage train with restaurant. It actually was only 4 carriages with no restaurant. I guess in summer they put more cars. Until the border, the train was relatively empty, with most people not sharing compartments. From Priboj it got quite busy.

I did the opposite direction, you end up glued to the windows during the 2 hour mountain section while the locals look at you like it's no big deal
-
Only the last two hours? I've been almost most of the trip looking through the corridor window!
Unfortunately in winter it becomes dark relatively early, so from Užice to Belgrade, it was dark outside.
-
I thought the best bit was the last couple of hours before Bar, but it's defo generally a nice route.

I did the reverse trip 2 years ago. Absolutely unbelievable. Gawping out of the windows whilst locals sat reading the paper and sharing fruit on their daily trips. Just amazing.
