    In principle no "residual ISIS presence" means no US troops required to stay and fight an insurgency. Hopefully it means Trump is about to evacuate every single US soldier from Syria. And even Iraq.

    As Trumps declares victory over IS, it is interesting to note the evolution of his victory maps. 2 days ago Teumps brandished a map that showed extensive "residual ISIS presence". Today map shows no "residual" presence at all.

    So the most important context for me when looking back is less the ‘sense’ or fear in Mosul, and more that Fallouja had been outside government control for six months, and three months prior to Mosul, Soleimani and Maliki were organizing the first PMUs.

    In this paper ISW claims Turkey is aligning on Russia in Syria while precisely the opposite is happening : Turkey is blocking Russia, Iran and Assad offensive on Idlib. And since 2015, the US has consistently worked with Russia to oppose Turkey and defeated the rebels.

    The funny thing with Americans is that they can arm and support groups/countries currently at war against a NATO member (like the PKK against Turkey) without "undermining NATO". While other NATO members merely talking with non-NATO members is "undermining NATO" 🙄

    From 2015. Very interesting read on the reluctance of the US to give any meaningful support to the rebels. Even after the emergence of ISIS in Syria, the US simply dithered. Anyone who thinks this war was "regime change" needs to read this.
